Generative AI: Policy

Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)

At UW-Madison, all students are expected to uphold the core values of academic integrity which include honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility.

Students are never to use AI unless allowed in a particular course. Since instructors’ expectations will vary from course to course, it is the student’s responsibility to know whether AI can be used. If they are unsure whether AI tools are allowed in a particular course or for an assignment, it is the student’s responsibility to ask their instructor before using them.

If AI is allowed by an instructor, here are some of their guidelines for its use:

1. Students should only use University approved AI tools (ChatGPT, Copilot Chate, Gemini goggle, Webex AI assistant, Zoom AI companion, and NotebookLM)

2. If students use an AI tool they must cite any word for word use and paraphrasing generated by the tool: researchguides.library.wisc.edu/GenerativeAI

3. Students may never put protected data generated from their research ( such as: research data protected by HIPPA, intellectual property, material under confidential review (grants, manuscripts) in an AI tool.

If a student is suspected of using an AI tool and the course does not allow it, the student could be subject to disciplinary action regarding the violation of UWS chapter 14.03 and as outlined in UWS 14.04. https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/code/admin_code/uws/14
